Disease Name : Mycobacteriosis / fish tuberculosis

Causative Agent : Mycobacterium marinum, Mycobacterium fortuitum

Diagnostic Method : Interanal wet-mount preparation

Symptoms

  • Ulcerative skin lesions
  • Reduced appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Exophthalmia (‘‘pop-eye’’)
  • Staying alone in the corner of the aquarium
  • Fin or tail rot / frayed fins, fins and scale loss
  • Skeletal abnormalities
  • Hollowed belly
  • Yellowish or darker nodules apper on eyes or body

Host (Common sp.)

  • Goldfish and Koi carp
  • Livebeares
  • Fighter fish
  • Zebra fish
  • Tetra fish (neon tetra)
  • barbs
  • Gourami fish (dwarf gourami)

Treatment Method

  • Tetracycline (3-4 gm/100 l for 2-3 days, water change after treatment; mixed with food: 0.5 gm/100 gm fish food to be fed during 5 days.)
  • Streptomycin (2 gm/100L for several days and afterwards do 25-40% water change)
  • Erythromycin (2g/100L for 2 days, and can be repeated once a week for three weeks)
