Diagnostic Method : Gram Stain method

Symptoms

  • The belly fills with fluids and becomes swollen
  • Grossly swollen belly
  • Scales that stand out with a pinecone-like appearance
  • Gills that are pale
  • Loss of apetite
  • Lethargy
  • Flashing
  • Clamped fins
  • Feces that are pale and stringy
  • Skin lesions (Ulcers on the body)or fin rot
  • Swimming near the surface of the tank
  • Internal organs are damaged
  • Discoloration, a swollen anus, pale gills
  • Ultimately the fish will die

Host (Common sp.)

  • Gold fish
  • Other freshwater aquarium fish

Treatment Method

  • Move the sick fish to a "hospital tank."
  • Add 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon of water in the hospital tank
  • Feed the fish fresh, high-quality foods.
  • Treat the fish with antibiotics, either in the food or in the water.
  • Test the water in the hospital tank daily to ensure it is appropriate for the fish.
