Exoskeleton

The skeleton covering the outside of the body


Maxilliped

First paired appendage of the thorax. These are modified for feeding


Pereopods

Pereopods (legs) are usually slender, but in some, a single leg or pair of legs may be stout and some pereiopods end in pincers


Pleopods

Pleopods are used for swimming, are well developed and, most often present on all abdominal segments.


Carapace

Shield-like structure coving head and most of thorax


Telson

The terminal (posterior) unit of the abdomen


Uropod

An appendage of the last abdominal segment


Chela

The two distal segments of a cheliped forming a pinching claw


blotch

A large irregular patch or unsightly mark on the shrimp body


Rostrum

beak or pointed nose like structure at the front of the shrimp's head ; can be used for attack or defense
